Roanoke Youth Arts is a dynamic collaborative effort, bringing together various local arts organizations in the Roanoke Valley. Our aim is to create a supportive network where each organization contributes its expertise and resources to empower young students with opportunities in the arts. There are so many benefits that engagement with music and the arts can offer, including fostering creativity, enhancing personal development, and building a sense of community.
Through our partnership, we hope to maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date listing of available professional arts and music programs tailored specifically for young students. Whether it's music lessons, theater workshops, art classes, ballet and dance, choir programs, youth symphony, or performance opportunities, Roanoke Youth Arts serves as a central hub for students and their families to discover and explore the vibrant artistic landscape of our area.

The Roanoke Valley Children’s Choir, founded in 1987, is a pre-professional choir program for ages 6-18 that provides young singers the best place to nurture their talent by learning proper vocal technique, musical skills, and making new friends who also love to sing! The RVCC's mission is to provide youth with exceptional musical instruction and performance opportunities in a safe and inclusive environment. There are opportunities to join the choir in May, August, and December each year, with no auditions required for students in 1st-8th grade.

About the Roanoke Valley Children's Choir:
Now in its 37th year under the direction of Ms. Davidson, the Roanoke Valley Children’s Choir has earned national recognition for choral excellence and is a highly respected arts organization in the Roanoke Valley and in the state of Virginia. The choir is made up of 140 singers representing 50 different schools throughout the Roanoke Valley and surrounding communities. Our full-year Choir Program is open to students in 1st-12th grade and is divided into two Elementary Choirs, a Youth Choir, and Concert Choir. Rehearsals are on Mondays afternoons throughout the school year at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem, VA. We have two annual concert, as well as many other exciting performances throughout the community and travel opportunities for our singers each year.

Our mission is to provide youth with exceptional musical instruction and performance opportunities in a safe and inclusive environment, while growing confidence, teamwork, leadership skills, having fun, and making lasting friendships along the way. We strive to teach young musicians of the Roanoke Valley how to work together and pursue excellence - in singing, in music, and in everyday life.
Singing in a children’s choir can be life changing for so many children. Along with the artistic expression and musical skills, the choir program teaches confidence, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership. The culmination of these qualities leads to skilled young singers, diligent musicians, and emerging community leaders.
How to Join:
There are opportunities to join the choir in May, August, and December each year.
“Come and Sing” with us at our next Introductory Newcomer Class for rising 1st-12th grade new singers on Thursday, June 13th, 2024 from 5:00-6:00pm at Bethel Baptist Church. No auditions required for students in 1st-8th grade. Auditions for 9th-12th grade students will be held after each class. About Southwest Virginia Ballet:
Southwest Virginia Ballet has been contributing to our southwest Virginia community for 34 years, serving over 15,000 children and adults annually. SVB began as a vision of founding director Tess (Terri) Post in 1990. Her vision was for a regional ballet company that would provide pre-professional training and quality performances of varied repertoire including classical ballet, contemporary and modern works.

How to Join:
Company membership is open to all ballet students in the Roanoke region. Company membership, instruction, and costumes are provided FREE OF CHARGE. Membership is based on demonstrated skill level and is open to all dancers without regard to gender, race, color or national origin.

The RYSO is an auditioned, full symphonic orchestra composed of 70 musicians, ages 12-18, who perform symphonic repertoire and rehearse weekly on Sunday afternoons during the academic year. The RYSO was founded in 1957 by Hazel Burnham and has since had an array of wonderful conductors. Currently, led by David Webb, the RYSO is the only professional orchestral training program for young people in Southwest Virginia. The RSO also has programs available for younger and beginning students, including the Roanoke Youth String Ensemble for ages 8-14 and after-school group violin classes through partnerships with Roanoke County and Salem City Public Schools.

About Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra:
The RYSO is an auditioned, full symphonic orchestra for advanced high school musicians in the Roanoke area composed of 70 musicians, ages 12-18. The RYSO performs symphonic repertoire in three public concerts throughout the Roanoke area each year. Students are admitted by yearly auditions and rehearse weekly at Patrick Henry High School on Sunday afternoons during the academic year. For younger students, the Roanoke Youth String Ensemble is available for beginning-to-intermediate string players, ages 8-14. Many String Ensemble members, after achieving an appropriate level of skill, successfully audition to become members of the RYSO. Additionally, the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra is proud to partner with Roanoke County Public Schools and Salem City Public Schools to offer after-school group violin classes for beginning string players.

Mission Statement:
The RYSO strives to provide young musicians with an opportunity to perform and engage with high level orchestral repertoire before leaving the high school careers. Led by David Webb, the RYSO is the only professional orchestral training program for young people in Southwest Virginia.
How to Join:
Students ages 12-18 can audition to join the full Roanoke Youth Symphony Orchestra. This year, auditions will be hosted on June 30th, 2024. You can sign up and schedule your audition time on the RYSO website (rso.com/ryso) or by contacting Hannah Cox (hannah.cox@rso.com).
Students ages 8-14 are eligible to join String Ensemble after one year of private instrument instruction or one year of participation in one of the RSO’s After-School Programs. There is no audition requirement for participation in String Ensemble. Please email hannah.cox@rso.com for information.

The Studio School is a non-profit art organization with a 30+ year history of offering creative classes for all ages and all levels of experience. Our instructors are among the area’s best-known artists and they offer a wealth of knowledge, guidance and inspiration.
